snowboarding at rutherford in pemberton bc

Following up on our wild weather shift in Whistler the day before, on March 7, 2011, we packed up the sleds and headed north to Pemberton.

Our mission was simple: access the deep, high-elevation powder of the Rutherford Creek drainage.

📷 The Photo Timeline

In backcountry action photography, timing is everything. For this shoot in the Rutherford zones, we had a very specific target. We planned our active shooting window from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

During these four hours, the winter sun hit the Rutherford zone at the absolute perfect angle. The side-lighting and back-lighting from the morning sun carved out the texture of the snow, giving us incredible contrast, sharp shadows, and beautiful backlit powder sprays.
